Looks like Rihanna's fave fall trend is catching on, y'all! That's right, we're talking no shirts, no bras, no problem. At least, no major problems. Yet. The trend has now spread from Rih to Nicki Minaj to Mariah Carey and while they're all approaching it differently, the fundamentals are the same: 1.put on pants and/or shorts, 2. do not put on a bra, 3. do not put on a shirt, 4. put on a jacket, and, finally, 5. close the jacket a little bit, whether by button or zipper, and then do yo thang.
Nicki Minaj has worn the look twice: once to promote her new fragrance, and once to launch her Kmart collection. The lady is busy building businesses: she doesn't have time for shirts or bras! Plus, she just straight-up hates bras. She said so herself, on Ellen. Different occasions call for different shirtless looks, though Nicki's two approaches have similar elements: black pants and gold chains, especially around the waist. What goes on top is flexible—Nicki has worn both a jacket from her own collection and one from Moschino—just as long as there's no shirt underneath it.
Mariah Carey is the latest singer to join the shirtless crew: she got her membership card just yesterday during a little studio interview session with Jermaine Dupri. Mimi posted a picture of herself on Instagram yesterday, with the caption, "Doing press! #LettingGo" (Maybe she didn't have enough characters left for the "OfMyShirt" part of her hashtag.) Mariah's approach is distinct from Nicki's or Rihanna's, in that zippers are involved, and the tenuous closure is coming from the bottom, rather than the top. Mariah also upped the ante by pulling off the look with not a jacket, but a leather vest. So much skin, so little fabric.
Finally, the trendsetter herself, Ms. Robyn "Rihanna" Fenty introduced the look on a super casual shopping trip in Soho and then liked it so much, she reprised it in London. Both times Rih opted for letterman jackets, probably because the long cotton sleeves provide the perfect buffer between her bare skin and the outside world. Much like Mariah's vest choice, Rih's #jorts choice is commendable because there is so little skin is covered. One misstep and she's basically nude in the street. That's the stuff nightmares are made of, TBH.
Do you think the trend will spread further into the pop music community? Who do you think will wear it next? Our money would've been on Miley, but since peeping her in that floor-length gown, we're just not sure.
